I’m genuinely curious how other indie makers and founders come up with names for their products or startups.
Do you come up with a name first and then try to find a domain to go with it or does domain availability heavily influence what you decide to name your startup/product?
I've heard much about how founders feel like all the good domains are mostly taken, and finding something that’s memorable, professional, and available has become increasingly difficult. Do you use name generators and standard brainstorming sessions, I’m interested in how others navigate brand naming.
I’d love to hear what works for you (what your process is) and again, whether the domain choice actually matters in the long run.
For context, here’s how I personally approach naming:
A lot of my ideas come from everyday life, conversations, TV shows, podcasts, random phrases that just feel like they could be startup names. When something sticks, I write it down immediately.
I also look for inspiration in a few specific places:
Startup databases and media sites
VC portfolios (great for spotting naming patterns)
Brand naming agencies — I study how professionals think about naming
OneLook’s reverse dictionary — surprisingly useful for discovering related words and synonyms
And one slightly contrarian take:
Yes, if you can get the exact name you want on a .com, you should absolutely do it. No question. But I don’t think founders should get stuck on “.com or nothing.” There are plenty of credible alternatives today, and countless successful companies started (and still operate) on non-.com domains.
As I stated earlier I'm curious how others here approach this, especially early on when time and budget were tight.
